Technology is a boon of modern era. It encompasses

anything and everything. Technology has single-handedly made life more

convenient, achievable and effective. Technology touched every aspect of the lives of people. People started depending more on technology and the need for labor started decreasing. Technology is so intricately linked with the lives of the people that in the absence, the world will descend into the chaos and tension. In the past, journeys and travel took much time. Now those days are gone. The fast moving trains and airplanes are there to assist us. The world has shrunk. Telephones, telegraph and wireless flash the news across the world in a moment. Nature is indifferent; rather it sometimes becomes hostile to man. It is too vast and fearful to be controlled by man. It is technology which tames nature for the benefit of man. People started believing in technology and gradually, allowed technology to enter into every aspect of their lives.

One great technology, which has added greatly to the joy and comfort of life, is computer. Mechanical computing devices date from 17th century. Indeed Charles Babbage is credited with the invention of computer. He named it the “ANALYTICAL ENGINE”. The first digital computer appeared in USA in the 1940s. It was a simple machine of calculations, almost as big as room. Somehow it could not attract the attention of other scientists or people. Since then generations have worked to reduce the size and increase the speed of the computer. However, in the last thirty years or so computer has become a part and parcel of human life. Its excessive use

electronic device capable of performing a series of arithmetic or logical operations, according to instructions. A computer can solve mathematical equations, engineering problems of building and electric power distribution. It counts, lists, compares and rearranges different details on a subject according to detailed program instructions.

The word computer has been derived from the word ‘compute’ which means ‘to count’. In Latin, to compute means to find total of or to calculate. Computer

consists of three major parts i.e. input media, output media and a central

processing unit (CPU). Input media is in the form of keyboard. Output media is like television monitor which shows the results if CPU. CPU is the main component which calculates the data. A computer is composed of hardware means physical parts of computer. Software means the computer programs that control the functioning of hardware and directs its operation
